Eleven tonnes of rice meant for Public Distribution System (PDS) were seized near Kattuveera Anjaneyar Temple in Krishnagiri on Krishnagiri-Bangalore National Highway on Sunday.
District Revenue Officer C. Prakasam told The Hindu that officials intercepted a lorry proceeding towards an unknown destination in Karnataka from Chennai.
Officials confirmed that the rice was meant for PDS in the State roughly worth about Rs.1.5 lakh. They arrested driver D. Rajkumar and two others M. Durairaj and T. Kumaresan and handed over them to the Food Cell wing of the district police.
The officials also found that 230 bags each containing 48 kg was being smuggled. C. Murugesan, District Supply Officer, inspected the seized rice.
The arrested were produced before the Krishnagiri Judicial Magistrate I and were remanded to 15 days' custody.
