Cabinet Secretary can have four-year term

July 22, 2010 02:53 am | Updated 02:53 am IST - NEW DELHI

The Union Cabinet on Thursday will approve a change in the service rules governing the office of the Cabinet Secretary. Under the new rules, the government will have the liberty to retain an incumbent for four years regardless of when she or he reaches the age of superannuation.

The immediate beneficiary of the change will be the present Cabinet Secretary, K.M. Chandrasekhar, who has been on a three-year tenure. The new rules will allow the government to offer the next Cabinet Secretary an uninterrupted four-year term.
