Film director M.S. Sathyu has said that every film by Adoor Gopalakrishnan need not win an award.
Addressing a meet-the-press programme at the Thrissur Press Club on Wednesday, Mr. Sathyu said there was no rule that parallel films should always win awards.
“The State and national awards are for excellence in cinema, for development of cinema. They are not just for promoting alternative cinema. I gather there has been a controversy over the Kerala State film awards this year too. A similar one had been there when Adoor's 'Mathilukal' had competed for the awards and I was a member of the jury. That year, Sreenivasan was chosen for the best director prize. The jury was attacked for the decision. We, jurors, boldly resisted the criticism,” Mr. Sathyu said.
