Anantnag killings: Omar promises action in 24 hours

July 07, 2010 03:11 am | Updated 03:11 am IST - SRINAGAR:

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday assured people that action would be initiated within 24 hours against those involved in the killing of three youths in Anantnag last week.

He was speaking at a citizens' meeting in Anantnag town, which has been under curfew for the past six days. “They [three youths] were killed while being chased to their homes and that should not have happened,” he said.

“Had they been killed on the road, one would have imagined that they might have pelted stones but they were killed in their homes.”

“I will go back to Srinagar and take action within 24 hours after going through the report,” he told the meeting, adding that “some responsibility has to be fixed.”

“I am here to listen to you and get firsthand information about the events that caused the law and order problem that resulted in the loss of lives,” he said. According to him, such interactions were aimed at getting the viewpoints of civil society to address law and order issues more effectively.

“In my similar meetings with the citizens of Srinagar and Baramulla, I heard the suggestions of the people,” he said, maintaining that the government would consider them positively to tone up the law and order machinery.

Development issues

Responding to the development demands raised by some of the participants, the Chief Minister said the District Development Board meeting would be held soon to address these issues and finalise the annual plan. “I will myself discuss development with you when I visit here again.”
