GUNTUR:A rare kidney transplant surgery has given a new lease of life to two men at NRI General Hospital here.
Dasi Ramesh and M.Venkateswara Rao, suffering from chronic kidney disease stage V and on hemodialysis for the past one year, were admitted at the hospital some time back. The patients also needed renal transplantation for survival.
Doctors concluded that renal transplant was not done initially as the blood groups of the patients did not match with the blood groups of members of their families.
Mr. Ramesh whose blood group is “B+ve” but his wife Rangamma has blood group of “A+ve”. M. Venkateswara Rao whose blood group is “A+ve” and his mother M. Satyavathi has “B+ve” blood group.
After counselling both families, doctors at NRI Hospital decided to opt for ‘Swap transplant,’ a rare process of kidney transplantation, where the kidneys of both relatives have been swapped.
The surgery was done on July 6 and the patients were discharged on July 22.
“This kind of swap surgery is useful in cases where there is a mismatch of kidneys of donors. However, this needs a lot of technical support, a large expert operating team,’’ said secretary of NRI Hospital Narsa Raju Manthena and Koneru Sreedhar.
Six urologists G.Srinivasa Rao, O.Subba Reddy, K.S.N.Chary, Suresh, Satish Kumar, Srimannarayna were present.
