“Woman must not accept; she must challenge. She must not be awed by that which has been built up around her; she must reverence that woman in her which struggles for expression.” Margaret Sanger

A noble cause

We stepped into the new millennium with the vision of a society ‘where women are equal partners like men'. But it looks like we have to go a long way to reach this goal. The students of Loyola College are working for the cause of empowerment of women through the programme ‘Outreach'. The group organised a five-day learning programme from February 22 to 26, when women were given training to produce home made goods and introduced to basics of small scale business. At first, we spoke to the some women from the area to find out what their requirements were. Based on these meetings, we decided to train them to make items like phenyl ,candles and washing powder.

The chief guest was Selvarani, principal, S.B.O.A School and Junior College . Father Dr. G. Joseph Antony Samy, S.J, Director cum Vice-Principal, Loyola College, spoke about the situation of women in society today. Selvarani inspired the audience to fight for their rights. She also shared a few nostalgic moments from her life. The whole programme was intended to give women the power to make their own living. The programme emphasised that women's empowerment is intertwined with respect for human rights.
