Calling Elvis

Calling Elvis is a song about a fan who tries to reach Elvis thinking that he is still alive and the lyrics have names of famous Elvis songs. Knopfler on the vocals is excellent and haunting. The guitaring is classic Knopfler, unique and beautiful.

Led Zeppelin

Stairway to Heaven

Arguably one of the greatest rock songs ever written. It opens with an acoustic sound from Page's guitar and Plant's soft vocals only to explode in the finale with all four band members at the peak of their powers. Page's solo is etched in the minds of all rock lovers. Though there are claims of satanic references and backward masking, the song is still a stairway to heaven.

Pink Floyd

Time

Dark side of the moon is a landmark album in which Floyd are at their lyrical and musical best. Floyd's novelty is reflected right from opening where multiple clocks chime at the same time. Gilmour's guitar solo adds to the unearthly feel. The lines every year is getting shorter, you never seem to find time rings true.

Black Sabbath

War Pigs

At the time of the Vietnam War, musicians around the world wrote songs that condemned war and called for peace. Sabbath sent the same message and how! In a style that they pioneered and which later came to be known as heavy metal (a name which they detest), Sabbath wrote War Pigs. Ozzy's powerful vocals and words make it a haunting song and Tony Iommi's riffs have influenced many a guitarist through the years.

U2

Unchained Melody

In this song, the sheer power of Bono's voice and Edge's signature guitaring take your breath away. Though this song is a cover of a song composed by Alex North and performed by many illustrious artists, the U2 version appeals more and makes this song figure above many other truly brilliant songs by this band.

Those that almost made it
