George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon were crowned King and Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on May 12, 1937. Almost every country under British rule had released identical stamps on this occasion as illustrated here. King George VI was the last emperor of India, until June 2, 1948, when Indian independence was ratified. He was also the last king of Ireland and head of the First Commonwealth. He visited India with his daughter Elizabeth II, the present ruling Queen, in the early 1950's. Old timers might have seen them when they visited Chennai, (then Madras). Before 1948, Indian postal stamps generally had the picture of King George VI's head in a side view. Prior to 1937, Indian stamps had the picture of King George V, with his characteristic beard.

The identical feature of these stamps suggests that they were designed and printed in England itself, and then sent to the respective country for distribution.
