Indhra Dhanush 2011: By young artists of A.L.P.A.N.A

The annual inter-house choir festival at the Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, was held recently. The event was presided by Rahul Ram of the music band Indian ocean. The eight houses of the school presented songs in Indian and other languages ranging from Punjabi to French to Japanese. The competition comprised folk, contemporary and classical music and was based on the universal themes of love, peace and harmony. Eminent personalities from the field of music judged the competition which began with the lightning of the lamp and an invocation dance. Principal Dr. Jyoti Bose welcomed the guests. <EP>The Forward House was awarded first prize and Endeavour House emerged second. The third prize went to Peace House while Amity and Unity Houses were awarded consolation prizes. Natasha Verghese of Forward House received the prize for the best solo performance in the female category and Kushan Kishore Dhawan of Endeavour House in the male category.

Asociation for Learning Performing Arts and Normative Action (A.L.P.A.N.A.), a voluntary organisation, presented Indradhanush 2011 at Poorva Sanskritik Kendra, Vikas Marg, New Delhi. It was a kaleidoscope of dance and music items presented by the special children of A.L.P.A.N.A. Odissi dancers presented “Mangalacharana”. “Srijan”, and many other dances were also presented. The last item for the evening was specially choreographed by eminent Odissi Guru Sudhakar Sahoo.

Students and teachers of CSKM Public School, Satbari, Chattarpur, celebrated World Health Week in association with the Naz Foundation(India), NADA (India) Foundation and World Health Organisation. Students from Std III to XII involved in various activities like an Interactive programme on HIV and AIDS, painting competition on the theme “My Delhi ! Healthy Delhi!” , oral health campaign by Dr. Raghavendra Jaiman, and a session on “Health and winning habits” by Monica Menon, Asiad player, were held. The theme of this year was “Anti-microbial Resistance: no action today, no cure tomorrow!” Students had an interactive session which dealt with issues like how AMR (Anti-Microbial Resistance) hampers the control of infectious disease, how it is a threat to the pre-antibiotic era, and the increase in cost in health care due to AMR.

Sanskrit Department of the Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram,organised a lecture by eminent cardiologist, Padmashri Dr. K.K. Aggarwal on “Science behind Rituals”. Principal, Dr. D.R . Saini, welcomed the guests. Dr. Aggarwal threw light on how seemingly baseless rituals and traditions actually have a solid scientific basis. He linked the tradition of eating gram (‘chana’) and jaggery (‘Gur’ ) on a fasting day to ensuring the intake of iron , while a bath in the river in the morning during Magh season is to ensure the requisite levels of Vitamin D. An interactive session with the students followed. Vice-principal Shobha awarded certificates to the winners. The Head of the Department, Dr. Asha Lata Pandey, proposed a vote of thanks.
