In yet another attack on educational institutions, a private school has been set ablaze by some miscreants in Manipur’s Thoubal district after it defied the diktat of three students’ organisations to boycott classes.

Some assailants entered the Khongjom Standard English School complex, about 35 km south east of here, on Monday night and set the building on fire, a delayed official report reaching here today said.

This is the third incident in which an educational institute has been set afire by miscreants after the government’s call to open them from November 9.

On November 10, some miscreants had torched the Kakching Khunou College and Langmeidong High School in Thoubal district.

Official sources said the government had announced earlier that educational institutions which had closed since September 9 following class boycott call by three students’ organisations, should be reopened from November 9 and they (institutions) would be provided security.

After getting security from the government, some schools in Imphal had opened, sources said.

Three students’ organisations —— the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF) and Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) —— supporting the demands of the major social organisation Apunba Lup (AL), had called for boycott of all classes from September 9 and since then all educational institutions have remained closed particularly in four districts, Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishenpur and Thoubal.

The AL, which has been agitating against the killing of a youth in an alleged encounter, is demanding resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on moral grounds, dismissal of commandos involved in the incident and criminal proceedings and stern action against senior police officers responsible for deployment of the commandos.

Twentyseven-year-old Chungkham Sanjit was killed in an alleged encounter by police commandos on July 23 at Imphal market complex.
