Bad weather hit the U.S. Open for the first time this year on Thursday when an ongoing quarterfinal between favorite Rafael Nadal and Chilean Fernando Gonzalez had to be postponed.
Nadal, who’s heading for the last grand slam title missing from his collection, was leading 7—6(4), 6—6 with the Chilean serving at 2—3 in the tiebreak when a second shower burst halted it at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The duo will resume the quarterfinal encounter on Friday.
Winner from the suspended match will meet Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, who won a battle of 20—year—olds with a 4—6, 6—3, 6—2, 6—1 comeback over Croatian Marin Cilic through blustery conditions.
World No. 1 Roger Federer and another title favorite Novak Djokovic moved through safely on Wednesday and have two days off before Saturday’s scheduled semis.
Earlier on Thursday, fourth seeded Serena and Venus Williams defeated 13th seeds Alisa Kleybanova and Ekaterina Makarova of Russia to make the women’s doubles final.
Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrott lift the mixed doubles trophy at home after smashing second—seeded combined duo Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Leander Paes of India.
