The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee will not allow the practice of sharing party committees on the basis of factional loyalties while reconstituting the party apparatus.

This message was conveyed to party men by KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran at a meeting he convened to discuss the revamp process.

He said the KPCC would not hesitate to intervene if persons with criminal background and of dubious character came to occupy important positions on the party committees.

Focus on merit

Addressing a press conference after the meeting to announce the dates of the elections to party committees, Mr. Sudheeran said factionalism was a reality but track record, character, and merit would also be considered while selecting office-bearers. The election of booth committees would be held simultaneously across the State on August 10 at 4 p.m. All senior leaders had been asked to attend the booth committee meeting in their locality on that day.

Mandalam and block presidents who had completed 10 years in office would have to make way for new faces. In the DCCs, 50 per cent of the office-bearers would be new faces.

Presiding officers of local bodies would not be inducted as presidents of the block, mandalam, and district congress committees, though they would not be barred from holding other posts.

Mr. Sudheeran said the revamp up to the district level would be completed by August 31. These reconstituted committees would be equipped to handle the elections to local bodies and later to the Assembly two years hence.
