Police said a roof collapsed during a wedding in Baghlan in northern Afghanistan and killed 65 people, many of them women and children.

Jawad Bashart, spokesman for the provincial police, says 40 people were wounded in Wednesday’s disaster in Baghlan province. He says the house, made only of mud bricks, was overloaded. The spokesman says most of the dead were women on the top floor who were celebrating separately from the men. Twelve children were also among the dead.

Houses in rural Afghanistan are typically made out of mud brick and wooden beams.
