Love Story by Erich Segal

Oliver Barrett IV and Jennifer 'Jenny' Cavilleri are from entirely different backgrounds. Privileged Oliver is the son of a wealthy businessman/barrister whereas Jennifer is a working class girl whose father is a baker. Despite coming from two different worlds, they meet and fall in love. They get married in spite of Oliver’s father being vehemently opposed to their union. As a result, Oliver is disowned by his father and cut off from his inheritance. Determined to make it on their own, Jenny works as a private school teacher to pay for Oliver’s law studies. After becoming a lawyer, Oliver moves to New York City with Jenny. Soon after, they discover that Jenny has a fatal illness, with very little time to live.  Love Story  was one of the best novels of 1970, and has been translated into more than 20 languages. It was made into an English as well as a Hindi film.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." With this opening statement, the author plunges the reader into the complicated lives and loves of the Bennet family. Set during the turn of the 19th century, this classic tale is centred round marriage and courtship. Mrs Bennet, the mother of 5 daughters, is a foolish woman who is completely obsessed with finding suitable husbands for her children. When Mr Bingley, a wealthy bachelor, arrives on the scene, she takes on the mission of making one of her daughters his wife. The second of the Bennet sisters, charming and witty Elizabeth Bennet, is the protagonist of this tale. Elizabeth takes an immediate dislike to Mr Bringley’s close and even wealthier friend Mr Darcy. She judges him to be pompous and arrogant. Witness the sparks fly as their personalities collide in Jane Austen’s masterpiece that has entertained audiences for over two centuries.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

A man reads to a woman one morning from an old worn out notebook. It is the tale of two people, Noah and Allen, who fall in love as teenagers while in New Bern, a coastal town in North Carolina. He wants to become the owner of a plantation-style house and she wants to be an artist. They are kept apart as they belong to different socio-economic backgrounds. Noah joins the army, returns, and rebuilds a plantation house out of an abandoned building. He does this to forget the girl he once loved. Allen goes on to study further and becomes a nurse. She gets engaged to a rich officer she meets as a patient. While preparing for her wedding which is to take place in a few days, she realizes she hasn't painted in a long while.

The old man reads the story to the old woman every morning from the same old worn out notebook. He believes that one day she will remember.

This heart-warming story is based on how the author's grandparents-in-law met and married.
