A WAY WITH WORDS The winners

Chennai hosted the grand finale of Spellinc 2010 — an interschool spelling contest organised by Linc Pen and Plastics recently. In its 11th edition, the annual event tested the knowledge and English vocabulary skills of school children in Classes VIII to X.

The preliminaries were held in 75 schools in Chennai and neighbouring areas over the last few months. Eight schools qualified for the grand finale, and each school was represented by three students.

They vied with each other for two hours with five rounds of spelling exercises, anagrams, crosswords etc. Paloma, who presented the event, kept the competitors going with her infectious sense of humour.

After a tough battle of words, the first prize went to DAV Matric. HSS, Gill Nagar. The winners — S. Maanasa, N. Niveditha and R. Sujana — were richer by Rs. 30,000, while the first and second runners up took home Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 9,000 respectively.
