Much to the chagrin of its residents, Hanumantha Road is not a quiet stretch anymore. This 200 feet-long road, which lies between Bazullah Road and Somasundaram Ground, has become traffic-ridden following the traffic diversion on Kodambakkam flyover. On this road, bike and auto drivers stop at a corner tea shop.
“They park their bikes and autos on the entire stretch, eat and drink at the tea shop which also provides for a quick lunch. Some use the street as a public convenience. When our watchman asks them not to do so, they threaten him. There is such a bad stench that residents find it difficult to walk out of their houses,” says Rama P., who has stopped sitting in her balcony that overlook the road. “The tea shop owner also doesn’t care about the cleanliness of the area. Leftovers are dumped on the street, attracting a lot of mosquitoes,” she adds.
Adding to the trouble is the huge rolls of electricity cables left on the street by the electricity department. “The electricity office is just opposite our house and they use the street as a storehouse for their cables. Sometimes, they take up the entire street. Where will residents park their vehicles?” asks Vasudevan, another resident. The residents want their once quiet street to become safer and more hygienic.
