Sixty two year old Sushilamma is running a temperature and is too tired to move. She needs to see a doctor, but instead of visiting a nearby clinic or hospital, she calls a doctor. The doctor arrives, diagnoses, and writes her a prescription. Sushilamma is one of the many in the city who can now avail themselves the services of a doctor through a phone call.
Care and Cure, a home health care service started by S. Jayalal, a critical care physician and Shiju S.L., a member of the nursing staff, provides ‘doctors on call’. The duo, working at PRS Hospital, started the service after observing how most people try and avoid going to the doctor for various reasons, be it physical difficulty in getting to the doctor’s outpatient department chamber or lack of transportation.
“There are also cases where patients do not want to be discharged from the hospital as they do not have proper care facility at home. Through Care and Cure, you can see a doctor and seek consultation from the comforts of home,” says Shiju.
The organisation provides a range of medical services to patients starting from primary care and post-hospitalisation services to geriatric care and pain and palliative care.
“We have a team of doctors and professional nurses dedicated to this and offer non-emergency medical attention. Our nurses provide 24-hour monitoring of patients who are in need of it,” says Renjith, who is in charge of the administration of Care and Cure.
