With a stated mission to revive Telugu Theatre with literature and history and elevate it to an international level, Hyderabad-based Kartaal Productions helmed by Seema Azharuddin is presenting ‘ Cine Bhasmasura’ , a laugh-a-minute comedy magnum opus with 25 characters enacted by film and theatre artistes. The play commemorates the fifth anniversary of Kartaal Productions that has to date presented Broadway classics in Hyderabad through the productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and also An Evening with Shakespeare , followed by JFK Eulogy. Kartaal has also made two films: a docu-drama, Ammulu on the theatre family Surabhi and a Telugu feature film April Fool.

Elaborating on the reason for her mission, Seema Azharuddin, producer of Kartaal Productions says, “Telugu, as we know it, is only second to Hindi, in the language that is spoken in our country. While several festivals and events from other performing art theatre groups and troupes highlight drama and plays in English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali etc, Telugu theatre remains neglected, forgotten. Theatre in Telugu has vanished! 30 years ago it was a different story, but a story 30 years old leaves a faint memory in the minds of audience. Only the Surabhi family relentlessly endeavours to be the beacon for theatre survival in Telugu. In the name of passion, talent, artistes that need work, young people who need the opportunity to become people of higher expression, theatre in Telugu is one answer. Cine Bhasmasura is our first Telugu production in that direction.”

Directed by Udaya Bhanu, Cine Bhasmasura includes Tanikella Bharani, Mohan Babu, Naresh, Shivaji Raja, Brahmaji, Kota Sankara Rao, Suma, Anita Chowdhary, Vizag Prasad, Ravi Verma and 15 others. The play will also begin with an ode to theatre by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry and music by Keervani.

Date: November 21 and 22 (Saturday and Sunday)

Venue: Ravindra Bharati
