Her love for history is reflected in everything she does. It could be her 10-year-old interest as fashion stylist or her recently discovered love of jewellery design. Sankeerthi Aipanjiguly doesn’t actually design jewellery, but she puts a look together for you.
At her recent jewellery exhibition, Rabbit out of Hat, at Vermillion House, she had a mix of modern and ancient jewellery pieces from across the globe including Morroco, Yemen, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and a Victorian era pendant of unknown origin.
To all those who wonder if antique jewellery goes with modern outfits, Sankeerthi says: “I wear these pieces with my regular clothes. The trick is not to go overboard as it would look absurd.” Sankeerthi is against polishing antique jewellery. “Imagine destroying a piece of art with polish!”
“My sister collected jewellery from all over the world. I accompanied her and being a stylist, it in an extension of my interest. Fascinated by the similarity of design, Sankeerthi says: “I have jewellery from Sri Lanka and Morocco and people mistake it with the jewellery from Rajasthan. There are some distinct characteristics such as wire work, enamel and use of glass, which helps distinguish the jewellery.”
Sankeerthi accepts that she is not a good business woman and does not even bother being one. “I am happy that all the pieces which I collect are picked up immediately.”
“Sometimes people ask me that how do I remember every piece in my collection and I tell them the effort made to collect each of them ensures I remember them all.”
