Meet debutante actress Sargun Mehta

Just one serial old, Sargun Mehta, who played the role of Neetu Sethi in the Zee TV serial 12/24 Karol Bagh, has bagged the role of Geeta in Apno Ke liye Geeta Ka Dharmyudh, yet another roll-out from the channel.

“After Karol Bagh got over, I thought ‘Let me go to Mumbai and try my luck.' I gave myself a two-week notice to find work and I got the role of Geeta in the first 10 days itself,” quips the young actor. Talking about her role, she states, “In Karol Bagh, I was playing a supporting role, the character had grey shades. Geeta, however, is this new serial's lead character.”

Born and brought up in Chandigarh, Sargun did her graduation from Delhi University's Kirori Mal College, where she was an active member of its theatre club.

“Those were my most memorable years. We had even gone twice to IIT-Powai to represent our college. I had also directed a play for the club,” she recalls. Sargun says she landed her part in Karol Bagh by accident. “My friends and I from the theatre club were asked by one of our professors to audition for the role and I landed Neetu's part.”

Supporting the theme of the new Zee TV serial based on the misuse of Section 498A that empowers and protects women against domestic violence, she says, “We should fight back for what is right, my character does that and I completely agree with it.”

However, wary of being typecast as another one of television's ‘bahus', she hastily adds, “But I won't be a typical bahu on TV. Even I am not completely clear on what constitutes one but I won't be it.”

The serial, which started recently, is shown on Zee TV at 6.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
