Some time ago, during a class tour to Mysore, I visited the Brindavan Gardens along with my friends and teachers. We were an effervescent lot as it was our first day out. We were amazed by the ravishing sights and just couldn’t stop snapping pictures. But then I noticed that almost everyone there was busy taking photographs, either with their still cameras or mobile phones and other such electronic devices. Nobody was interested in observing the pristine beauty and elegance of the gardens. Most of them take pictures just to upload it on some social networking site or brag about it or preserve their “memories” of the place.
I just don’t get it! What memories would they have of the place if all they do is take photographs or pose for one? You’ll surely find this madness at any tourist place you go.
What is the purpose of visiting a place, when you don’t discover the beauty of it, learn about its history or get to know surprising facts about it? You might as well not go there. The travel cost to these places you’re visiting and the entrance ticket plus camera charges will be of no use. Decide to first look around the new place, learn about it and when you feel satisfied, turn on your camera and get on with it. Next time you go somewhere, ditch your camera, and instead stimulate your senses and observe. You might get more than plain memories!
