Director Lingusamy once again proves that he is the man to go to when it comes to the action genre films.
“Paiya” is a romance-cum-action-packed entertainer, which goes out of its way to treat audiences who have been craving for this kind of film for a long time. It is vintage (or typical) Tamil cinema that has a larger than life hero, gravity defying stunts along with brilliant music.
Plot
Siva (Karthi Sivakumar) is an engineering graduate who is searching for a job. He then meets Charu (Tamannaah) at a bus stop (remember “Run”?) and falls for her.
Circumstances lead to Siva helping Charu to escape from the goons. The following two hours is a road journey where the hero meets his fate, and a climax which leads to a happy ending.
Highs and lows
What makes this film stand apart is its racy screenplay, which does not bore the viewer one bit. Another factor is the film's cast and crew. The editing by Anthony is top-notch.
Madhie's cinematography is brilliant, especially in the car chase sequences. Yuvan Shankar Raja again proves that working with an excellent director leads to outstanding music. My personal favourites are “Thuli Thuli” and “Adada Mazhaida”.
Karthi again belts out a convincing performance, thus showing that he has arrived as a hero.
Tamannaah is sizzling and delivers a mature performance. Milind Soman is wasted in his role of a villain. Jegan, last seen in “Ayan”, again wins over the masses with his comic timing.
On the flip side, Karthi's inability to speak English in the film although he is an urban youth baffles the audience. The marriage scenes in the film could have been avoided.
All in all, “Paiya” has got all the ingredients to become this summer's first blockbuster. It is aimed at school and college-goers and is successful in catering to its target audience.
The viewer will definitely get his money's worth by watching the film.
