BIG SCREEN
Movie: Osthi
Cast: Silambarasan, Richa, Santhanam, Sonu Sood
“Osthi”, the remake of the Bollywood blockbuster “Dabangg”, makes no bones about the fact that it is a commercial entertainer, which can be enjoyed in theatres with popcorn and without brains. The introductory scene where people and objects fly in the air bears testimony to this fact.
Masala
The film is a glorification of its protagonist Velan (STR), who plays a corrupt cop. The plot of this flick is similar to that of the films (of the same genre) of the 1980s. It deals with affection between him and his mother (Revathy), his hatred towards his brother Balan (Jithan Ramesh), his love interest Neduvaali (Richa) and his encounters with the baddie, Daniel (Sonu Sood). How Velan overpowers him and brings his family together forms the crux of the movie.
Films like “Osthi” require the hero to have a commanding screen presence, if they are to have any chance at the box office. STR excels in this aspect. He mouths punch dialogues with aplomb and gives a truly kick-ass performance.
Santhanam, as STR's sidekick, once again brings the roof down with his witty one liners. Sonu Sood delivers a neat performance.
The songs, composed by Thaman, are foot tapping, with Osthe Maamey and Pondatti being the pick of the lot. Director Dharani's slick packaging and Simbu's osthi performance make this film worth watching.
Bottomline: Time-pass entertainer!
