Still from the movie "Lafangey Parindey".

Still from the movie "Lafangey Parindey".

After the dud “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag”, Pradeep Sarkar delivers this time with “Lafangey Parindey”. The movie's strong point is its crisp narration. With a running time of just about two hours, the film never lags.

“Lafangey Parindey” is by no means a classic. It has a lot of flaws and takes cinematic liberties (the last scene of the movie being a case in point) but from an audience's point of view, the film entertains.

Plot

The movie — story, screenplay and dialogues by Gopi Puthran — is set in the streets of Mumbai. Nandan Kamtekar (Neil Nitin Mukesh) known as ‘One Shot Nandu', is a ring-fighter who fights for Usman Bhai (Piyush Mishra). Pinky Palkar (Deepika Padukone) is a roller-skate dancer who aspires to win the “India's Got Talent” reality show which she considers as her passport to the real world.

As fate would have it, Pinky loses her eye-sight in an accident (shown from both the protagonists' point of view) but is unaware of the fact that it was Nandu who was driving the car which hit her. How Nandu sets things right and how Pinky comes to know of the truth behind her accident forms the rest of the plot.

Performances

Neil has done his part decently, but is capable of a higher level of performance. Deepika playing a visually-challenged girl is good. Manish Choudary as the investigating officer and both Neil and Deepika's friends play their parts well. Kay Kay Menon, even in a short role, impresses and so does Piyush Mishra as the local don.

The choreographers Bosco-Caesar and Sandro Guerra deserve high accolades for the graceful moves; though there are times when one feels that it is not the lead pair of Neil and Deepika who is performing on stage (their faces appear distorted at times during the climax performance).

Each song, set to tune by R. Anandh, is a treat to the ears. While ‘Nain parindey' is soothing, ‘Dhatad tatad' stands out for its high energy. Another department where the director along with his editor (Sanjib Datta) scores is in the placement of songs. Each song augments the situation and takes the movie forward — a lesson for other directors. The cool bike stunts shown during the title song is worth a mention too.

Movie: Lafangey Parindey

Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Deepika Padukone

Bottomline: If expectations are low, you won't be disappointed.
