The Madras Musical Association choir presents a concert of light music “Musical Montage 2010”, on April 17, featuring the hits of Michael Jackson, excerpts from Broadway musicals, favourites from movies such as “Love Story”, and a little jazz and country music for good measure. There is a sing-along towards the end involving audience participation.
The concert will be held in the open air theatre of St.Christopher's College of Education on EVK Sampath Salai.
The 80-strong choir will be backed by popular jazz band, Blue Note, along with Edwin Roy on the piano.
The concept and compilation of the show are by MMA's music director, Augustine Paul.
‘Somewhere over the rainbow' from “The Wizard of Oz”, ‘On the street where you live' from “My Fair Lady”, ‘Memory' from “Cats”, ‘Music of the Night' from “Phantom of the Opera” … are just some of the songs that will be rendered.
Most of the medleys have also been drawn from popular musicals such as “South Pacific”, “Little Mermaid”, “Showboat”, and “The Sound of Music”. Old-time favourites such as Bobby Darin's “Things we used to do” and the sentimental “Killing me softly” are included in the repertoire.
What's special about Musical Montage 2010 is, it will feature the “Jai Ho” girl Tanvi Shah.
Besides Tanvi, the other soloists will be Megha Harini, Ebenezer Arunkumar, Kalyani Nair, Sangita Santosham and Nadisha Thomas.
Besides Musical Montage, the MMA usually hosts a musical treat Carols by Candlelight every December at the same venue.
The choir has won international acclaim and is slated to perform in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Tickets are available at Musee Musicals, Pro Musicals and with members of the choir.
