A videotape brought us together. The media house she worked for had to receive a videotape on an Indian epic, by courier. It did not happen; and in a fortuitous development, I was requested by a friend to pass that videotape on to Sumithra. If the courier service had come into the picture, we would not have met.

Now, videotapes drive a wedge between us. He likes to watch films imbued with magic realism, and those high on adventure. He will go for a ‘Lord of the Rings' or a ‘Mackenna's Gold' any day. I prefer films with social themes. As we don't agree about what makes for good viewing, fighting for the video player is inevitable.

Spontaneity is her strength. But, I like to plan ahead and go through the process. If I want to watch a film, I will go in for reservations. She is seldom shacked by such considerations — she'll simply land up at the cinema hoping to get tickets. When ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' was released, she whisked me to the cinema. We succeeded in only getting bench seats. It has been my weirdest experience watching a film.

Both of us share a passion for cricket. But our loyalties often lie with different teams. As I lived a good part of my life in Mumbai, I supported Mumbai Indians in IPL. As a true-blood Chennaite, he roots for Chennai Super Kings. So, you can understand the tension that prevailed during the MI - CSK final in IPL-3.
