The mark of a good restaurant need not always be in its size or a prime location. This is so true of the newly-opened Slice Of Heaven – a patisserie and bistro on Assayee Road, Ulsoor.

This cosy joint was started by businessman Vivek Mata. Hailing from Punjab, Vivek had the passion to travel and eat at tiny restaurants in Europe. That “love for food led to the genesis of Slice Of Heaven,” he says.

Located on the second floor of Splendid Skywalk building, it’s a rickety lift in the still under renovation building that leads you to this classy looking food joint. It’s compact in its seating and has lovely doodle art work on a mirrored wall by a 11-year-old artist on one side while the other has bright images of food from the menu that simply lures you into temptation.

As we wait for food, we are served some chilled treats – in flavours of mango, lemon and ginger, each with crushed ice. Then we sip on tangy, creamy and hot tomato soup with basil, which is easily a favourite.

Then comes the Greek salad with feta cheese, assorted bell peppers, onions, crunchy cucumber, and cherry tomatoes all tossed in extra virgin olive oil. Biting into this salad after the tangy soup was a great idea.

This place also offers a wide range of options in the vegetarian section too, which is a delight. Opting for the spaghetti aglio-e-olio seems promising. This pasta dish comes with delicious herbs and sun-dried tomatoes. Then it’s a bite of the lasagne, our all-time favourite dish. The vegetarian version, served here, is lighter with thin layers of mozarella and cheddar cheese, loaded with vegetables in a tomato-based sauce. Normally, when one eats lasagne it’s so cheesy and rich that you cannot think of eating another bite for many hours. But here the dish was neither too rich nor creamy and yet was delicious enough that even after we stuffed ourselves, we still had ample space to try out more dishes.

After this it’s a bite of the mushroom ragu with herb rice. Here the rice is cooked with mushroom using the slow cooking method and then flavoured with certain herbs, explains Vivek.

Then comes the grand finale - the desserts. No matter how good the starters and the main courses are, it’s always the dessert that sweeps you off your feet.

Slice Of Heaven offers you a range of tarts, brownies, muffins and the works. All are made in-house, adds Vivek. Beware; don't read further if you are a diet freak. But, for all you foodies out there, the brownies are to die for. Especially, the one called just chocolate. Loaded with chocolate and chocolate and more chocolate, you just have to throw all your dieting resolutions out of the window while you bite into this divine chewy treat.

Slice Of Heaven is worth a visit. The patisserie also sells a wide range of breads and pastries as take aways. The place is open everyday and can be contacted on 41230002 or sliceofheaven.in.
