In 35 days, with one vehicle, nine people, and a whole lot of food, booze and tattoos, Brett Rogers combs through South Africa in search of the best eateries, breweries and tattoo artists. A model, a designer, and a swimmer, Food, Booze and Tattoos is Brett’s first appearance on the small screen.
To those who wonder about the connection between the three, Brett says over the phone, “I see them as different branches of the same subject — art and creativity. Chefs, distillers, or tattooists are all creators.” Brett says he doesn’t have favourites. He explains that there was never any competition between products. His aim was to experience produces, and learn their stories. Having said that, Brett confesses “I did enjoy some things more than others—the buffalo mozzarella from Swellendam, and this winery called Herold Wines in George.”
Describing Indian food as “out of this world” Brett who lives in a predominantly Indian neighbourhood, counts paratha and palak paneer as his favourites. Brett says he is a moderately good cook.
Moving to tattoos, Brett says he has doesn’t regret any of his inkings. “I don’t subscribe to the idea of perfection, so just because they are not perfect on my body, doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them.” Brett explains he has good tattoos and bad ones, that remind him of both good times and bad. His favourite tattoo, Brett says, is always his most recent one.
Music kept Brett company through the several long days of travel. “I am a big music fan, so I like to have music all along the way”. Brett adds, that Food, Booze and Tattoos has a wonderful soundtrack, as a really passionate team of quality musicians over varying cultures and genres helped produce it. Brett says that on his playlist right now, is Australian punk band – The Drones. Not really a punk fan, Brett admits to being a hip-hop guy, and loves 50 Cent.
Brett enjoys rock climbing and water skiing, but goes on to add that he likes art, music and fashion a lot more. Brett hopes to shoot a second season, and would love to explore other countries. Especially countries that have supported the show – Sweden, Poland Italy, Brazil, and India.
Food, Booze and Tattoos airs every Sunday at 10 pm on TLC.
