For a minute, tune out the images of Scarlett Johansson in a hot-as-hell green Versace gown, or Lupita Nyong’o in her custom white Calvin Klein Collection gown (that apparently featured 6,000 hand-sewn pearls), or even Lady Gaga and her ridiculous red dishwashing gloves. What were the red carpet ensembles of the men who attended the Academy Awards?
English actor David Oyelowo’s name might pose a bit of a (pronunciation) setback but his fashion game wasn’t. Turning out in burgundy Dolce & Gabbana suit, David, who was snubbed for the Best Actor Award for his portrayal of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the biographical drama Selma , definitely won the Oscar for the most innovative way to wear a suit in a sea of the usual blacks, greys or even navys. And speaking of navy, Eddie Redmayne and Ansel Elgort ( Fault in Our Stars ) both turned out in stunning blue tuxedos — my vote goes to Redmayne, whose suit was a touch darker.
Sticking with the best dressed, Jared Leto turned out in a powder blue Givenchy suit pairing it with a pink flower brooch. While this isn’t the first time Leto is turning out in a coloured suit (he wore a bright blue blazer at 2015 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, an ivory tuxedo jacket, white shirt and red silk bow tie at the last year's Oscars), his bold choice wins extra points at the red carpet.
However, one of the most bizarre fashion choices of the night has to be awarded to Will.i.am, who perhaps thought it was a good idea to channel his inner Beetlejuice (incidentally Michael Keaton was present and thankfully stuck to the perfunctory black suit) and wore a pinstriped shirt.
While it is hard to find anything wrong with Benedict Cumberbatch — and his entourage of Tumblr fans will agree with me — his white blazer with a white shirt didn't do much for fashion. But full props to him for bringing a hip flask of liquid luck along with him. Also, a special shoutout to JK Simmons who accessorised with a black fedora hat, and a dark blue handkerchief to match his wife’s gown.
