Short and shoulder-length haircuts are the best for this season

Come monsoon and bad hair days turn into terrible hair months. From frizzy and untamed tresses and sticky hair to unusually large flakes of dandruff, this season presents challenges. Here is a cheat sheet to get your hair monsoon ready.

Bobs and pixie cuts Short and shoulder-length haircuts are the best for this season as they need minimal maintenance. Bobs are chic and there are different ways you can wear it, depending on your face shape. You can sport the inverted/graduated bob like Victoria Beckham, or you can also try a Katie Holmes bob that comes with a side swept fringe. Choppy bangs also go well with the pixie cut. If you are feeling more experimental, try an asymmetrical bob so even if you do get wet in the rain, the messy wet look would still be a winner.

The ponytail This is the perfect time to bring back the schoolgirl look, with a new take on the conventional ponytail. Side ponytails and ones tied low at the nape of one’s neck are very feminine. You can also consider scrunching your hair before you tie it. Complete the look with floral headbands.

The bun The ballerina bun Jennifer Lopez wore to the charity ball in Maid in Manhattan is among the hottest trends of the season. Also known as the top knot bun, you don’t have to keep it uptight and tidy like she did. You can also opt for a messy bun. On or off the ramp, the ballerina bun will never go out of fashion and in the rains it is a great way to manage hair.

Half-up, half-down Not sure if you want to tie your hair up or let it down? The good news is you don’t have to do either. A combo of the two is what looks chic this monsoon. It takes years off your face without making you look like a teenager. Also, with the umpteen hair accessories that are available in the market today, this hairstyle is equally suitable for casual and formal occasions.

The braid Like with the new age ponytail, side braids are quite the rage. You could also give the fishtail plait and the milkmaid braid a shot. The milkmaid braid suits all face shapes, but works best on those with long hair as it’s easier to braid long tresses. Drape the braids across your forehead and pin them on opposite sides. You can style these braids with flowers if you can carry it off with confidence. Braids look good irrespective of one’s choice of outfit. Also, braids are best for frizz control!

Loose waves Frizzy hair is the most common and often unsightly problem during the monsoons and wearing your hair tight in a braid, bun or a ponytail might not work for you, depending on the texture of your hair. In such a case, go for the loose waves look. All you need to do is make a few loose curls/scrunch your hair when it’s wet and then leave your hair open. Open hair also dries easily so you can expect this tousled look to make heads turn.

Vintage roll and tuck When the rains come, it is time to go retro with hair and this style works specially well for those with curly locks.
