Colours on the feet

Mismatched boots, fluorescent-hued shoes…footwear is no more a staid affair.

Would you wear a pink shoe on one foot and a blue one on the other? Please go right ahead and sport something like that.

For, this is what is trending among students. It all started with the last football World Cup in Brazil.

Mario Balotelli wore mismatched boots and set off a whole new fashion trend.

C. Srihari, a college student from Ooty, says he adopts a similar style because he likes to be different. Of course, people giggle when they walk past him, but he does not mind the attention. “My dad says he is going to throw me, if not my shoes, out of the house,” he laughs.

Walk into any college and you will see students walking around in colourful footwear.

Gone are the days when wearing bright colours was the prerogative of girls. Boys now sport colours such as blue, green, orange, yellow, red, and what not!

“We like attention, and these colours are a great way to gain that,” says T.A. Syed Ibhrahim, who studies in an arts college.

Variety at a discount

Students buy these shoes on deals from e-commerce sites such as Flipkart and Jabong. “Online stores offer more variety and the discounts are a huge advantage too,” says A. Dhruvesh Shah. Puma seems to be the hot favourite among students, for they even have shoes with different-coloured laces for each pair.

This trend seems to have skipped engineering colleges, because students there dress in formals. A. Mohamed Rizwan, who is pursuing his BBM, says he opted for an arts course just because it gave him the freedom to dress up the way he wanted. That is because, students seek constant change and want to be trend setters, says C. Balakrishnamoorthy, a professor of psychology.

V. Maheswari, who teaches costume and fashion design, says that this trend of wearing bright hued shoes will soon change. However, she is all for giving students the freedom to dress the way they want. “It showcases their creativity and helps them determine their fashion sense,” she says.
