A shot at a silver lining

Young working professionals are smitten by all things silver this season

If the newly-elected MP Kirron Kher looks special flaunting a winning smile in her exquisite sari and jewellery (remember how she made heads turn with her silver jewellery in India’s Got Talent ), Vidya Balan’s dangling silver jhumkas create a desi belle look.

While Sonam Kapoor makes a fashionable silver statement, the white metal has an important role to play in Sonakshi Sinha’s retro look! This summer and wedding season, silver steps out as a rockstar with a mix of retro and trendy designs. With designers blending silver with different textures and metals like gold, precious and semi-precious stones and wood and in alluring colour combinations… working professionals are customising designs according to their tastes and budget.

Namrata, a journalism student from St. Francis College is smitten by all things silver. At a recent cousin’s wedding, guests couldn’t take their eyes off her big silver nose pin. “Gold can be worn by anyone. But it’s not the case with silver. One needs a certain kind of personality to carry silver jewellery,” she exults.

At Treasure Chest, a silver boutique in Banjara Hills, designer Sumesha’s creativity is expressed through her silver maang tikaas, jhumkas , hair pins, bun pins, kadas anklets, nose pins, finger rings and waist belts for women and bracelets and cuff links for men. “One doesn’t need a reason and season to buy silver,” she smiles and showcases a collection especially for weddings. “While women customise their designs, we have experimented with silver spectacles, tea cups and handbags too,” she says.

Versatility has been designer Suhani Pittie’s forte. Suhani has been credited for creating a niche and popularising silver on the ramp and at fashion week events. “What is really exciting now is the surface/texture work on silver,” she says. The clientele for conceptual silver jewellery demand exclusivity and will not sport a collection just because it is in vogue. “The clientele has a very refined taste. They understand the story and finesse behind every product and are not victims of trends. They are particular about finish and like intricate designing. They don’t need the bling to shine, and that, as a designer, is a great breather for me,” she states.

Affordability is one of the important reasons why women choose silver, states Sumesha. Agrees Namrata, “I can buy three sparkling silver sets in different designs for Rs. 50,000 and can mix and match according to my outfit. But for the same collection in gold, I would have to shell out money in lakhs.” Her silver shopping done every month includes two items designed by her.

All that glitters is not just gold as silver surges ahead and the designers cash in on its popularity. Suhani has begun world wide shipping from their online store. “A cohesive story will define the jewellery that we are planning to launch soon,” she says.

Madhavi, a finance professional sums up her love for silver: “Silver works well for working women as it is affordable and can be worn on both Indian and western wear. Silver is a better friend to me than diamonds as they visit me often.”
