Six children from the Association of People with Disability (APD) will be representing Karnataka in this year’s Sambhav, the annual fest organized by the Association for Learning Performing Arts and Normative Action (ALPANA) in New Delhi.
Sambhav, “an international platform for sharing of best practises in advancing rights of persons with disability through inclusive arts”, will include an international seminar on inclusive performing arts, mental health and dance as therapy for challenged persons; an international exhibition of paintings and artefacts made by challenged artists, a forum for international cooperation and an international event of performances by challenged artists. The forum brings together countries like Australia, Japan, China, Mongolia, Russia, Germany, UK, Spain, Canada, USA, Brazil and Egypt.
And the children from APD will be representing the State in both the painting as well as performing arts events.
“They are all aged between eight and 15, suffering from polio, speech and hearing impairment and cerebral palsy. They will be putting up works in charcoal, oils and watercolours and collages,” says Shivbodha, art coordinator with APD. “They will also be performing Indian folk dances, including Karnataka’s janapada, kolattam and peacock dance. This is the first time that Karnataka will be participating in the festival.” The festival brings together people with disability from across the world, and offers a platform for the children and people working with disability to see how the world deals with the issues, he says.
