The humble handloom assumed haute proportions at a fashion show hosted by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It was the third edition of the India International Handwoven Fair, and three designers made a contemporary statement with ethnic weaves.

With a number of well-known models including Carol Gracias walking the ramp, the event at Chennai Trade Centre, proved to be a fitting tribute to handloom. Designers Chaitanya Rao and Neesha Amrish from Chennai and Dhiraj Deka from Guwahati came up with distinctive lines. From the famed bandhini of Rajasthan and unique Mekhala designs of Assam to Pashmina of Kashmir and Kancheepuram weaves of Tamil Nadu, the event was a showcase of different textiles which constitute a vibrant aspect of our cultural heritage.

It was nice to see young designers respond to the challenges of the day by updating the age-old handloom and throwing up many innovations and styling them in a way that it appeals to the hip crowd.
