The strips of green and brown with black lines evoke the image of rolling grasslands with little fences enclosing lush fields. Shades of light green represent the grass while the dark green, trees. The brown could be soil or the earth or even tree trunks.
And that’s what Nadine Tarbouriech, who has displayed a series of works “Vernissage” at the Galerie De’Arts hopes to do. Through her work on recycled and handmade paper mainly in tempera and pigments, Nadine hopes to evoke the viewers’ memories of things they have seen in their lives, just as her own works are a reflection of the impressions she has gathered in her travels.
“I do not really have a concept in my works. I am not trying to figure anything, I am just working with my senses and emotions, through my memories of light, colours or shadows that I have witnessed, to recreate them. I am not trying to communicate anything. My work simple expresses what I have witnessed or have been sensitive to,” says the French artist who divides her time between Paris and India.
The current series of works is based in the Cholamandal artists’ village where Nadine works.
“We often have friends staying with us and they leave paper bags which I found when looking for paper. So I used some of the paper and recycled a part of it. It had lovely texture and responded to light and shade,” says Nadine.
They also responded to the tempera water colours, making the colours appear bright, she adds.
And so Nadine’s works, which are made of strips of paper put together, feature shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, rose and brown in abstract strokes.
The series also features her work on handmade paper simply using pigments of colour, mainly green, red and orange, which spread on paper producing a vivid texture and visual quality.
