The FIFA World Cup is all set to kick off in Sao Paulo, Brazil, today. As it is across the world, in Technopark too the anticipation has reached fever pitch, so much so that a bunch of techies are organising a ‘Football Fans World Cup’ on campus.

The tournament, which is on from June 17, is being conducted by Technopark-based sports start-up Sportz4You. “There are many football fans in Technopark and in the run-up to the World Cup, football is the buzz on campus, with pantry areas turning into debating spots and conference rooms into football fields! The idea for such a tournament came from this unbridled enthusiasm for the sport. Over the past year we’ve been working with over 300 football enthusiasts, who are part of the T-League, a year-long inter-company football championship and we thought of holding a local world cup, which will progress in tandem with that of FIFA,” explains Rahul Antony Thomas, co-founder and chief executive officer, Sportz4You.

For the tournament, techies will don the jerseys of the top eight teams, namely Brazil, Argentina, Spain, England, Italy, Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands, five to a team. The matches will be of half- hour duration and will be on from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the multi-purpose arena behind Technopark Club.

“The biggest issue for football enthusiasts in India is the time of the matches in Brazil. For those matches happening at 9.30 p.m., particularly from the quarterfinals stage, we are working on organising screenings in Technopark too,” adds Rahul.
