A jute-wrapped lifestyle seems to be the flavour of the festive season. Completely bio-degradable, the jute products when embellished with cotton and silk yarn become high-end fashion accessories.
The Navaratri Jute Fair organised by the South India Jute Association (SIJA) presents bags, home, office décor and artefacts reflecting jute’s charm and versatility. Choose from stylish handbags, evening clutches and pouches, smart shopping bags, school satchels and jholas, lap-top and travel bags. Also on offer are paper weights, wall art, animal forms, wine bags, string bags and office organisers .
The handbags in various sizes, colours and formats are embellished with Kalamkari art done in vegetable dyes, appliqué and patch work, mirror and bead work, animal images and block and screen printing. Jute dhurries and mats, lunch box carriers, bottle covers, photo frames, jewel-coloured tambool and gift bags also feature. A highlight of the exhibition is a black and white Last Supper done on jute canvas.
The Navaratri Jute Fair, sponsored by The National Jute Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is on at Vijaya Raja Thirumana Mandapam, 58 (old no. 20) 1st Avenue, Shastri Nagar, Adyar, till September 29.
