Goethe Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan and Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology present EXPERIMENTA 2015, The 9th International Biennial for Moving Image Art in India. It is India’s first and only international biennial celebrating experimental film and moving image art in India. This groundbreaking festival, that put Indian experimental filmmakers on the international scene, will showcase over 100 films, and videos from across the world, host artist talks, special-curated programmes and installations over five days at Max Mueller Bhavan.

The inaugural film this year will be the award-winning feature film, Court directed by Chaitanya Tamhane. This is the first official public screening of Court in Bengaluru. The film premiered at the 71st Venice International Film Festival in September 2014, where it won the Best Film in the Horizons category and the Luigi De Laurentiis (Lion of the Future) Award. The film also picked up the highest honour at the 2015 National Film Awards by winning the National Feature Film (Golden Lotus). There will be three shows of this multi-award-winning film at Max Mueller Bhavan.

Anand Patwardhan’s path-breaking film, Prisoners of Conscience and The New Wave by Chandrashekar Nair will be screened as part of a special programme: “Politics of Form” -- curated by Shai Heredia. The Kannada film Attihanu Mathu Kanaja (Fig Fruit and The Wasps) by M.S. Prakash Babu (Bengaluru), Noon Day Dispensary by Priya Sen (New Delhi), and Pati by Sohrab Hura (New Delhi) will also be screened in this section. The filmmakers will also be present.

Acclaimed artistes and curators from across the world will also be in attendance to present work within the special-curated programmes and artist profiles. Film artist -- Helga Fanderl (Germany) -- will showcase her work along with an artist talk. Video artist -- Bjørn Melhus (Germany) -- will exhibit an installation at theMax Mueller Bhavan Library.

He will also discuss his arts practice through an artist talk. International curators Lauren Howes (CFMDC, Canada), Akbar Yumni (Arkipel, Indonesia) and Merv Espina and Shireen Seno (Philippines) will also present historical and contemporary avantgarde films and videos.

In the contemporary International Competition Section, 30 films have been selected from over 400 submissions from across the world including Indonesia, South Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Canada, Germany, Ireland, USA and India. The Indian films selected include Payal Kapadia’s The Last Mango Before the Monsoon , Sameer Tawde’s Serpent of Life , Archana Menon’s Gudiya , Prantik Basu’s Hawa Mahal , Udita Bhargava’s Imraan , C/o Carrom Club and Korou Khundrakpam’s Memorials .
