HYDERABAD: Their winning attitude complements their steely resolve to take up more challenges. Catching up with them after winning three awards at the prestigious Electric Solar Vehicle Championship 2016, the group of 24 Undergraduates of Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology, Ghatkesar, Hyderabad, called ‘Mechanizers’ we find them elated with the achievement.
The competition, said to be the biggest in Asia, was conducted by the Punjab-based Imperial Society of Innovative Engineers (ISIE) at Radharaman Group of Institutions, Bhopal. ISIE promotes and encourages engineering students to innovate ‘commercially adaptable energy efficient solar vehicles’,
The Hyderabad team won prizes in three categories for their vehicle: 1. Light Weight Award (118.5 kg) 2. Best Solar Performer (40 meters in 35.19 seconds) 3. Overall Event Runner-Up. Choosing Lithium ion battery over the Lead Acid one and opting for Polycarbonate sheets for solar panels for their vehicle gave them an edge over other vehicles that entered the competition.
Expressing their joy over winning three prizes, the group’s captain A. Sujay credits their achievement to their collective hardwork. “We’ve been working since August on this project; sometimes we would spend the nights in the college as well. We are glad it paid off,” he says. While Fazil Hussain was the vice-captain, T. Srikanth was the driver for their vehicle.
Sujay explains some of the new age features of their vehicle like the Ultra Sensor Safety System, which sends alerts through an SMS when anyone meddles with the vehicle, a Proximity Sensor which detects an obstacle at a particular range and a Motor Heating Controller which is a heat sensor that displays the temperature on the dashboard and dissipates the heat.
Fast forward Not ones to rest on their laurels, the group is planning their next move that’ll take their efforts beyond land – a competition to alter vehicles to travel in water and air. More power to these budding tech wizards.
