The Oreo is a fairly simple innovation; a layer of vanilla, chocolate or strawberry cream sandwiched between two chocolate cookies. Its genius lay in its simplicity, and while it found many reincarnations in the form of milkshakes, cakes and ice-cream, three entrepreneurs from Chennai decided to take things one step further.

Oreo Compulsive Disorder, popularly shortened to OCD, was launched three months ago by recent graduates Vishal Bisani, Vikas Bisani and Sakshi Saraogi. Their flagship product is Oreos coated in flavours of melted chocolate: white, dark and milk. “The idea of chocolate-covered Oreos is actually something that anyone can do, but no one had done,” says Vishal.

The process, to the untrained eye, is deceptively simple; a mere matter of dipping Oreos into melted chocolate and then refrigerating them. However, the product took nearly five months to perfect. “It took a lot of experimenting to figure out the exact amount of ingredients we’d need, as well as deciding which flavours went well together. The weather in the city is our biggest enemy; our challenge is ensuring that the cookies don’t melt while they’re out for delivery,” says Sakshi.

The range of flavours, for now, remains traditional. Bite into one and you’ll find a contrast of silky chocolate layered over the crunch of a chocolate cookie. Their flavours, whether it’s strawberry, chocolate or vanilla, complement each other well, and it’s satisfyingly sweet without being overpowering.

“People don’t realise how innovative you can be with Oreo, and play around with things like the design and fondant. We have a Captain America-themed line coming up soon, and are planning to extend our range to nutella and peanut butter in a few weeks,” says the team.
