Sooraj Chwla started designing as a hobby when he was in college, “I started displaying my collection at private exhibitions under my label which was then called Opuus,” says the young designer who is now creator of his eponymous, “Sooraj Chwla”, “My collections are always trendy, contemporary, with an essence of simplicity.”

The man has gone from designer to entrepreneur with the launch of his store Belle Couture, “I started in October 2008, with an idea to attract clientele to a place where they can fulfil all their needs under one roof. Although the initial plan was to stock only my creations, I figured every designer has a different vision and forte, so putting them all together under one roof works well for the shopper as they will have a wider range to choose from,” says Sooraj.

“The clothes are well thought out and planned and I make sure I choose every single piece myself, so that any client who walks in will find themselves spoilt for choice.”

As his career started reaching its peak, he started a studio-cum-workshop at Okalipuram in 2001. As years went by, Sooraj happened to work a lot in the bridal trousseau section. Enjoying the wedding sector for some time now, Sooraj counsels brides and grooms on their personal choices and also designs outfits for various wedding occasions.

According to Sooraj he has no trouble dealing with brides, “It is not really difficult dealing with brides. Majority of the brides these days have already done their homework, so when we sit to style a garment, , they already have an idea of the look they want, which helps us to a great extent.”

Designing for brides is no easy task, “A lot of effort goes into designing bridal wear. The most important element is the bride who will wear it. There are factors like the colours that will suit her, the kind of look she will be able to carry off, the occasion etc. Once these things are finalised, then the whole outfit is put together. In fact, we invite the brides over periodically to see the progress so that they are also satisfied with the entire outfit.” The designer has no trouble dividing his duties, “The whole concept of the store is pure retail, each piece here has been chosen with utmost care and then put on display. I have another workshop where we meet up with brides and other clients to customise their outfits.” “I take care of everything myself, from designing, meeting clients, getting the outfit done etc. I believe in the personal touch.” Sooraj also designs clothes for the industrial sector including uniforms for hotel staff, hospitals and schools.
