Yatrik, the popular New Delhi theatre group, is looking back at a satisfying 50-year career (1964-2014) of creative activity. As part of its golden jubilee celebrations, the group presents, this Tuesday and Wednesday, Mary Zimmerman’s “Metamorphoses”, directed by veteran theatreperson Kusum Haidar.
The 80-minute play in English is based on Ovid’s Greek tales — tragic, shocking, thought-provoking and sometimes disturbing myths that are always larger than life. Here, though, the intention is to put the emphasis “on love and loss and the power they have of transforming us,” says a notice from the group. “Metamorphoses” juxtaposes the ancient and contemporary in language and image to tell a number of stories.
What with theatre productions getting more and more elaborate, it’s not surprising this one has a large pool of real water on stage, around and in which the action takes place.
A blend of the humorous and the tragic, and a wide range of emotions, make it a show to look out for. The production features Arti Nayar, Ashish Paliwal, Ashok Dhawan, Damandeep Sidhu, Gilles Chuyen, Kavita Seth, Keshav Moodliar, Shena Gamat, Shiv Jha-Mathur, Sonali Sharma, Sunit Tandon, and Vani Vyas.
“Metamorphoses” will be performed at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, on October 14 and 15, as part of the Old World Theatre Festival,7.30 p.m.
