Low on food, high on ambience

A trip to Moonshine café in Hauz Khas Village

On a Friday afternoon, to have lunch, I went to Delhi’s Hauz Khas Village market recently, more of a food hub now. There are plenty of options but Moonshine café caught my eye as a couple of friends had recommended it for good music and ambience some time ago. Located on a second floor, it was quite a steep climb for me but once I entered it was worth every step. A spacious café with unfinished walls, perfect music in the background and a cozy sofa by the window were good enough to impress me.

Though the menu seemed to be an ordinary one, without any soup and dessert offerings — a setback for me.

Missing my bowl of soup, I started with a beetroot Carpaccio and was disappointed with it from the first bite onwards. The beetroot was good but the caramelised walnuts were overdone and became sour. I had a bite or two and moved on to the appetizer section. I ordered flat bread with a couple of other dishes. The bread was fresh and rubbed with garlic which gave it a nice flavour. I loved every bit of it and would definitely come for it again. Out of the five non-vegetarian starters I tasted, it was only the chicken tangri which was worth a bite. Perfectly marinated tangri, bang on succulence, cooked to perfection, was a dish to cherish. Chicken wings in barbeque sauce were also decent enough.

Being a burger freak, I restricted myself to a tenderloin slider as I was not happy with its bun quality. To satisfy my meat cravings, I ordered a tenderloin steak as my main course and somehow managed to finish it. Again, the seasoning of the sauce was not balanced which overpowered the flavour of the steak.

The food at Moonshine is pretty average but still I might think of revisiting the café for its music and ambience. Though during my three-hour stay at the café, I could not see many diners, still, I am sure, by night, once the live band comes in or the deejay plays, it attracts a pack as it is one of the few places in Hauz Khas Village which has space to party and hangout with friends. It’s an event place but not a foodie destination.
