Praveena J

Bakeroe, Race Course

A home baker for about seven years, Praveena ventured into the wholesale space, baking for other outlets. In December 2012, she decided to strike out on her own.

She’s known for her customised cakes and unusual combinations, such as a tiramisu cup cake. Cupcakes work because they are cuter and tastier, she says. They also allow a baker to play with design.

Pooja Vinay

Indulge cupcakes, Saravanampatti

Pooja has been baking for five years now. When she moved from Chennai to Coimbatore, she set up a Facebook page for cupcakes. There was no looking back. She also takes individual baking classes. She uses butter cream for her creations and adds little touches such as fillings that turn cupcakes into works of art. She home delivers, depending on the order size.

Lathadevi R. Sivakumar

Latha’s Kitchen Studio, Goldwins

Latha got into baking because she wanted to whip up healthy stuff for her family. It helped that she was fascinated by cakes. She played around with ingredients, adding real fruit and herbs to come up with interesting dessert ideas. She started making cupcakes in 2011. “I think I will make cupcakes forever; the craze is here to stay.” She now also teaches children and adults how to bake.

She loves cupcakes because they allow her great scope to work on interesting combinations. Latha also makes savoury cupcakes. Think plump and fragrant pizza muffins.

Gayathri A

Le Sucre, Brookefields

A year ago, yet another homebaker set out to open a cupcakes store. Today, Gayathri is planning to open a second outlet. “I’ve always loved baking. Cupakes work well for me because they are fashionable, can be customised, and, most importantly, their manufacture can be standardised.” The smaller size helps, she says. It allows people to try more than one flavour! She recently holidayed in Italy and is all set to bring back the flavours of that land in her next batch of cupcakes.

Dhivya Anbuchelvan

Chocko Choza, R.S. Puram and Fun Republic Mall

In 2007, Dhivya and Anbuchelvan chucked promising engineering jobs to make chocolates. They soon branched into cakes and cupcakes. Today, almost every party order, especially those for children, includes cupcakes, says Dhivya. “I think they are popular because they are easy to serve, come in a comfortable portion size and are non-messy,” she says. Chocko Choza also customises cupcakes depending on the event, adding edible prints or character images on the cakes. Dhivya says they do not use artificial flavours or essences.
