Not all art patrons are people who go to auctions looking for a Husain or a Raza. Young professionals are interested too and flocking art shows with an eye for the unusual. Mumbai's Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke is hosting works of eight young artists, all in their 20s, in “Art for Young Collectors” to create an interface between young patrons and emerging names in the art field. The show should attract not just young collectors but also those looking for new expression in art by Indian artists.
Ranjana Steinruecke of Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke says, “Everyone has a story to tell. It begins with a few scattered words on a page and, as we grow, experience life and learn invaluable lessons along the way, our stories are enriched. The artists whose works have been selected reflect the journeys they've been on and the ones they are yet to undertake.”
Those whose artistic renderings will be on display are Abul Hisham, Midhungopi P., Arun K.S., Reshma Nair, Poorvesh Patel, Arundhati Saikia, Samir Mohanty and Juhikadevi Bhanjdeo from as diverse places as Kerala, Assam, Orissa, Chattisgarh and the Gujarat.
“The artists have poured their soul into their work, laying bare their deepest emotions and feelings, absorbing their environment, returning to their roots and discovering where they belong. Through the use of varied materials, from iron filings to acrylic; rice paper to charcoal, they piece together their very being for all to see,” says the gallery owner.
The work of Abul Hisham from Kerala is macabre dealing with the amorphousness of power and exploring this theme in different ways. Juhikadevi Bhanjdeo from Chattisgarh brings fabric installations of objects in thread in the manner of bell-metal casting, a reminder of the tribal tradition of Bastar region while Samir Mohanty from Orissa works with a wide range of materials, his works often an amalgamation of scientific and poetic thought.
The show will feature Poorvesh Patel's installations made from iron filings, sawdust and resin, and Midhungopi's painted surfaces and Arundhati Saikia's linear paintings in addition to Arun K.S.'s art work that comprises a basic drawing that develops into an image created by adding layers of paper pulp and scraping them down with sandpaper.
