A. Monica and S. Joshua, the Std. VIII students of Vijayawada-based Nirmala High School, were on cloud nine when they were declared winners of The Hindu Young World Quiz-2009 at the regional level. They qualified to represent Vijayawada region in the national-level quiz to be held at Coimbatore on November 6. The chief guest was D. Showraiah, Correspondent, Andhra Loyola College.

Practice makes perfect

Both Monica and Joshua had taken part in many quiz competitions. Probably, this helped them win the title.

"We were told about the quiz only the previous evenin.

To be frank, we have not done any homework for this event," the duo said in an elated tone, while filling the required forms for participating in the national event.

"This came as a pleasant surprise for us. We never thought that we can even clear the prelims round," they said, adding that they were not going to take any chance with the grand finale. They have decided to spend all their time in preparation for the finals.

Both Monica and Joshua seemed very balanced and calculation during the six-round event, as they never hesitated to give answers to the questions posed during the buzzer round.

Firm decision

"We did not want to take the risk of giving a wrong answer," they said in unison, even though there were no negative marks.

While Monica wants to become a civil servant, Joshua's aim is to become a doctor in the future.

Their immediate goal, however, is to win the national-level title of The Hindu Young World Quiz by competing with the best brains from different cities.
