Keeping the tradition of skilful strokes and stiff competition, the 18th edition of The Hindu Young World painting competition held in Thiruvananthapuram recently turned out to be yet another exciting event for the young artists. Participants of the event had a gala time as they painted away scenes of fun and celebration at the two-hour competition presented by Lotte Caramilk.
As many as 280 students representing 85 schools participated in the event held at the Government Women's College. Besides Thiruvananthapuram, students from Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts also participated in this edition of the competition.
Circuses and concerts
The topic for the junior category (Stds IV to VII) was ‘A day at the circus' and the topic for the senior section (Stds VIII to X) was ‘Pop Music Concert'. While elephants, clowns and acrobats filled the canvas in the junior category competition in the senior category it was all about flashy pop stars and dancing crowds. The senior section stood out for the skilful detailing and mature strokes of the paintings. Some of the participants also made use of the competition platform to pay tributes to artists like Michael Jackson and the Beatles.
Winners
Abhishek P. of Army School, Pangode, bagged the first prize in the senior category while Aarcha Suseendran of St. Thomas Central School, Mukkola, won the top slot in the junior category. Abhishek, a Std VIII student, took home a prize money of Rs. 5000 and citation and Std VI student Aarcha bagged a cash prize of Rs. 3000 and citation.
Yadhu Krishnan S. of ARR Public School, Nettayam, bagged the second place and SN Trust Central School, Kollam, student Rahul G. Prasad won the third place in the senior category. The second and third prize winners of this section took home a cash prize of Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000, respectively, besides citations.
Anjana Mahesh of Holy Angel's ISC School, Nanthancode, bagged the second position in the junior category while Abhineeth Ajay of Blue Mount Public School, Thonakkal, won the third prize in the junior category. Anjana won a cash prize of Rs. 2000 and citation while Abhineeth won a cash prize of Rs. 1000 and citation. Freelance artists Vinitha Anand and Salim Roy were the judges.
Apart from the first three prizes, seven students each in both the categories were awarded consolation prizes worth Rs. 500. All the prize winners were also given gift hampers by Lotte Caramilk while all participants were given participation certificates.
Technopark CEO Mervin Alexander gave away prizes to the winners at the valedictory function of the competition. Pepsico Cheetos Whoosh was the snack sponsor of the competition.
