For an event being held for the first time, the response was overwhelming. The first ever The Hindu Young World painting competition in Hubli attracted as many as 910 entries from various districts of North Karnataka, including Dharwad, Davanagere, Belgaum, Haveri, Bagalkot and Bijapur. 400 plus students were chosen to participate in the final of the Hubli region event which was held at JG College of Commerce at Vidyanagar in Hubli.
Winners
It was virtually a riot of colours with students using myriad colours to translate their ideas through colours on the canvasses. For the next two hours the students were lost in the world of colours. Within the stipulated time they produced such beautiful pieces of paintings that the judges for the event and senior artists M.J. Banglewale and B.Y. Nadagouder had to take extra time to select the winning paintings. Robin S. Lengade, Std V student from St. Paul's High School, Belgaum and Vaishnavi M. Mane, Std IX student from BDE Society's Girls High School, Bijapur were chosen winners in the Junior and Senior categories respectively.
Amogh S. Kanade and Renu P.B., both of MKET's Laxmanrao Kirlosker English Medium School, Harihar won the second prize in the junior and the senior categories while Urvi Shanbhag of M.V. Herwadkar English Medium High School, Belgaum and Basavaraj R. Chimmad of Tungal School, Jamkhandi won the third prize in junior and senior categories respectively.
Giving away the prizes Arya Acharya, an internationally acclaimed artist and writer, elaborated on how art and culture were as important as technology for the healthy growth of human civilisation and overall development of a society. He also commended The Hindu for encouraging the budding artists. V. Perumal, Manager- Corporate Relations, MIOT Hospitals (National sponsor) was also present at the prize distribution ceremony.
Sponsors
Apart from three prizes, seven consolation prizes were given in each category. While the first three winners in senior category got cash prizes of Rs. 5,000, Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 2,000 respectively, the first three winners in junior category got cash prizes of Rs. 3,000, Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000 respectively. The consolation prize winners got Rs. 500 each.
The event is an initiative of The Hindu-NIE. The national sponsors were Miot Hospitals nationally, while Annapurna Traders, Hubli, Aditya Milk and Milk Products, Belgaum and Omkar Packaged Drinking Water, Hubli were the regional sponsors.
