“I love painting and that's why am here,” said Shurwin S., a student of Stanes Anglo Indian H.S. School, Coimbatore, at the recently held The Hindu Young World Painting Competition 2010.
He was one of the 200 students who participated in the event and had a similar answer.
The two-hour-long event saw students from Stds. IV to X in two groups unleash their creativity using colour pencil, crayon, sketch pen, water colour and poster colour. The junior category students had to paint “Watching TV with family”, “Playing a game with friend(s)”, “Young favourite animal or bird”, or “Fancy dress competition in school”. The topics for seniors included “Visit to a museum”, “Village scene”, “Working on school project with friends”, or “Travelling in train”. The topics were as interesting as last year and he enjoyed painting, said I. Bharathwaraj, a student of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore. He won the third prize last year.
T. Chinnaraj, an art master of Satchidananda Jothi Nikethan Matriculation, Kallar, said the quality of the entries was so good that The Hindu should consider conducting an exhibition. He also wanted the paper to conduct art and painting classes for students.
S. Saravanan, a parent, said his son who had won various painting competitions also wanted to win the Young World contest. He appreciated the newspaper for continuing to encourage painting, which was not getting as much appreciation vis-à-vis singing and dancing.
Judges S. Murugesan, vice president, Coimbatore Art Foundation, and Raviraj, director, Lalit Kalakshetra, said they judged paintings based on visual appeal, colour, theme and composition. Chief guest Sheela Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, gave away the prizes. MIOT Hospitals, Chennai, was title the sponsor. ARC Aqua Pura, Gangotree Sweets and Snacks and Kids Kingdom were the other sponsors.
