You cannot miss the stone sculptures of animals that dot the lawn as you enter the precincts of Studio Ebony. Step into the showroom, and the pleasant smell of teak envelops you. Lanterns in bright, summery hues, furniture in teakwood, cane canopies… these are just a few from the long list of home décor products that the studio specialises in.
Established in 2000 by designers Samuel Victor and Ramu Subbiah, Studio Ebony is known for creating furniture, lighting and home accessories with style and substance. “All our products are made with reclaimed teak and rosewood, and designed to provide comfort,” says Samuel. Its core design principle is to create a product based on its requirement. Therefore, a table when designed takes into consideration the possibility of expanding to a larger size or the ease of being folded and put away when not in use. “Our furniture is handmade and has a natural wax finish as it nourishes the wood and makes the product look better over time. We have also created a bed with an arm-rest for people who love to read before going to bed,” he says.
Its highly skilled workforce has been trained by the late French designer and cabinet maker Pattrick Laffourcard who had great knowledge and expertise in combining French and Indian contemporary styles.
The cane work is made by differently-abled people who have been trained by French designers Jean Marc and Dominique. Samuel adds, “Our creations have recently adorned the Governor’s House the Raj Bhavan in Puducherry. We have also completed the restoration work at the Lady of Angels Church in Puducherry.”
